What is a people finder and why hire one?
There are basically two types of peope finder services, public record searchers and private investigators or private detectives.
The first type, public record searchers, are usually the least expensive. They do nothing other than search public records and provide you with whatever if any information turns up under the name or other information you provide. They normally do not verify any of the information they obtain nor do they normally tell you how old the information is. Other public record searchers run a social security number check (provided you furnished them with a valid number). These checks are usually what are called credit header checks and they provide the last reported information for your party. Note, however, that the last reported information is not always the most current information. Sometimes all you end up with is a list of one to one hundred names that match your party along with the last reported address for each name. It is then up to you to determin, if you can, which is your party and whether or not the address is any good.
The second type, private investigators, private detectives and detective agencies are, in almost every state, licensed and are allowed to provide a more thorough investigation. Some licensed investigators still only provide record searching services but most provide complete investigations (of course this does cost more). They also do a certain amout of record searching, but in addition they talk to people, follow leads and actually investigate. A good investigator will normally report back to you with verified information on your subject only or will advise you that your subject could not be located.
Note: Be careful of guarantees. Some businesses will guarantee to provide you with an address or there will be no charge. Unless they guarantee to provide you with a current verified address for your subject, the guarantee is worthless as all they are guaranteeing is to provide you with a last reported address for the name you furnish them. It may or may not be a current address and it may or may not be for your subject.
